| Notes | He grew up in the Valleys, a place safe and protected with only far-away tales about the Border offering any source of entertainment for him and his agemates. The stories were often fantastical and featured over the top Heroes facing down the Shades, and returning home to celebrate their Victories. He used to dream about becoming a Slayer and having those stories be about him. He dreamed about younglings admiring him, about them wanting to be him. When he was old enough he set out to create his own Legend. But the training at the Guardian's Peaks was harder than he had imagined, and he hated taking orders from the instructors and having to rely on others to help pass his tests. He wanted to master everything as quickly as possible, but the training was set up in such a way to prevent him from doing so. He saw it as a personal slight. A gate there to keep him from reaching his own greatness, because the Instructors weren't ready to be after thoughts in his story. He dropped out without completing any of the training. Laughed at the idea of ever returning. He didn't need a Guild. He didn't need to be a Slayer. He was already Blood-Marked, having grown up in The Valleys where it was common place for such a thing. There was nothing stopping him from making his own mark on the world. The memories leading up to his decision to cross the Border are clear, easily recalled and remembered plainly. It's the moments after that are hazy. Broken pieces of moments that were filled with encounters with undead carrion and other Shade-corrupted creatures that chased him and set him running. He died there, out beyond the Red. He can't recall who or what killed him. But he remembers struggling to breathe, remembers the world losing colour. He remembers a Shade carving off his face. Peeling away his identity both figuratively and literally, and shoving a plain white mask over the exposed skull. His corpse was used as a Shade Warrior, but he can't remember the time lost to that. It's unclear, muddied, and feels like it happened to someone else. He's thankful for that. The memories that he can put together are horrorific moments that splinter across his psyche and often render him mentally frozen until the pain scatters away. He remembers Waking Up beyond the Red, to finding a Black Mask fallen on the ground at his paws. It was crumbling to ash as control of his body returned to him, and by the time he was back in complete control, there was no evidence of the mask remaining. Unwilling to remain beyond the Red any longer, he fled back to the safety of the Border and the familiar boundaries of The Valleys. He didn't know what had happened to him, but he wanted to put as much space between himself and the Shades as he could until he could make sense of anything. Days passed in a blur of mental fog where he shifted between a nearly catatonic state and an almost-feral one where he turned his teeth against his own body and would try to bite off his paws and tail. Ever since Waking he's had violet quills lodged through his right arm and tail, but he's never been able to remove them no matter how much he tries. It was during this period that he met others like him. They sought him out, claiming to be able to sense those afflicted by the Shades. One of them was a black Raveeness who wore her own Black Mask proudly, concealing her identity just as much as it was making a statement. She called herself Ebony, and explained that he was one of them now. A member of the Black-Curse Order. She taught him about what they are. Shade Warriors that were created to cross the protections of the Border, and bring death from inside the protections of this world. Their numbers weren't yet many, because too many of their kind were found out or discovered by their former Guilds or friends before the Black-Curse Order could get to them. The majority of them were locked away in the Venishra Okral, where they were taken to be "treated" for Shade Sickness. Ebony told him that she makes sure those captured never know enough to reveal who and what they are, and that's she has been forced to set their deaths in motion when rescue has been beyond their reach. If their enemies knew what they were they'd be hunted down, killed, or experimented on by the Judicators. They don't have the numbers to stand against an open assault. Not yet. For now it was important to keep a low profile, but it was also vital that those afflicted by the Black-Curse have an outlet for the inner spectre of the Shade Warrior that they used to be. Shoving it down, pretending it's not there, only leads to the spectre breaking free. It needs to be let out; he needs an outlet to let it run free, to feed it the blood and fear it craves. Through training his control he learned that the violet-quills in his body are tied to a new ability of his. He can shoot the quills from his body, causing them to impale other living things and suck the life out of them. He can then recall the quills, feasting on the life they absorbed. As a member of the Black Curse Order it's important to keep what he is secret, but also to work against those seeking to destroy his kind. The Order is the only group of others like him, and he knows if anyone discovers what they are they will all be hunted down and slaughtered. He might not like working with or depending on others, but he's had to make the exception now. Survival is important. Continuing to exists is all that matters. The end goals of the Black-Curse Order are shrouded in mystery and misdirection. Only Ebony and Ivory seem to know what their kind was created for, and they work to keep it just as secret as the presence of the Black-Curse Order members. All members of the Black-Curse Order are wlecomed to help destablize the peace on this side of the Border, if they so choose, or to work at helping to conceal their existence. They aren't servants of the Shades. They have their own, separate, goal. But they are bound to the Shades, and whatever their future holds depends on the Shades surviving this war. (The Black-Curse Order is not affiliated with the Astralis, and would not consider those of the Astralis to be allies.) Due to his allergy to silver he'd not be compatible with any creatures made of silver (ie; silver Robotic Kats or Earth Kats with silver mutations). |
